Youth Action Council

Adultism, public speaking, leadership training…oh my!

August 12, 2024

In January 2023, the 15th Night Youth Action Council (YAC) gathered to reset for the New Year, focusing on their purpose and setting clear expectations for the journey ahead. During this meeting, they brainstormed professional development opportunities that would enhance their skills and leadership capabilities. After thoughtful discussion, they identified six key areas of interest: Adultism, effective public speaking, listening and communication, advocacy, boundaries, and overall leadership.

True to the spirit of 15th Night, the team applied for a grant to fund these essential trainings. They kicked off the series in October 2023 with a collaboration with True Colors United (TCU), a national organization dedicated to addressing youth homelessness with a focus on LGBTQ+ young people. Among their many initiatives, TCU partners with communities to deliver impactful training sessions, including on Adultism. The 15th Night YAC, along with community partners, participated in a full-day Adultism training. By the end of the session, the YAC was so inspired that they began envisioning a future where they could lead this training themselves.

The learning continued with a partnership with Jane Kammerzelt, founder of Great Teams International. Over six meetings, Jane guided the YAC through public speaking and leadership training, emphasizing the qualities that make an influential leader. The YAC explored the importance of nurture, attitude, self-discipline, and adding value to others—key traits that intersect to form strong leadership. Each session also provided practical opportunities for the members to hone their public speaking skills.

A heartfelt thank you to Jane Kammerzelt for dedicating six weeks to the Youth Action Council and generously sharing her expertise on what it takes to be a true leader!
